Tycoonism “There is more to life than increasing its speed.”

August 12, 2009

Stop and smell the roses is probably the biggest cliche ever.  But this adage is valuable as this indicates to us that speed is not necessary in this life.  Although we have gotten used to the world for fast food, fast service, instant messages and quick deliveries, this is not the essence of life.  Have you noticed that when you rush to make a decision, it usually has a bad outcome? That sometimes, things just don’t turn out as expected because you’re so anxious to get to the result, you didn’t take the time to properly think through the idea or the action? That when you fail to take the time to enjoy “the little things” because you’re moving a warp speed toward “the bigger things”, you don’t enjoy anything? Maybe we’re just too busy with work and too preoccupied with making money – or and we forgot about taking time off to be with family. Let me ask you… Have you missed something in your child’s life? Were you there when your son or daughter lost their first tooth? Were you there when they sang, or danced, or performed in a school play? Were you there when your wife (or your husband) needed help with the children? Stop and think: do you make yourself available to your family during weekends or do you spend more time in the office or working at home?

We seem to be slaves to time. But when we don’t TAKE THE TIME to pause, to look around, to stop and smell the roses, we miss the really important things in life. Of course, we rationalize by saying “Oh… I am doing this for you and the children,” or “I want us to have financial security”. But did you know that one of the primary reasons families break up is alienation of affection? Simply put, we distance ourselves from the ones we love?

Now, it’s understandable that when you’re at work, you tend to shy away from issues at home because you may be tired or even preoccupied with what you think is important. But part of our responsibility as parents and partners is not just to be able to put bacon on the table, but to ensure that everybody (including you) is well and happy. Ensuring the financial health of the family is not enough. You need to nurture every aspect of your family life, as well as your own individual life.

Do not wait until it is too late… Sometimes it takes a serious or tragic event to wake us up to see exactly what has happened to our families. Never lose sight of the people you love and pledge to take the time not only to care for them and yourself, but also to show them you care about them too!
